Situated next to the British Museum in the Bloomsbury section, the Montague on the Gardens defines the essence of luxury and comfort, with top notch service. This is what a hotel is meant to be.
Built around 1815 by the architect Decimus Burton and his father, who also designed the Buckingham Palace Archway. Several famous writers lived in the buildings comprising the hotel, including Virginia Woolf and Arthur Conan Doyle.
As part of the Red Carnation collection of hotels, the Montague on the Gardens provides an elegant and most refreshing stay. The townhouse hotel is a short walk from Covent Garden, the Financial District and the West End. There are many interesting restaurants, shops, boutiques and a rare bookshop in the vicinity.
The hotel includes 88 deluxe guest rooms, in addition to 11 luxury suites each having a rich character and uniquely appointed with careful detail. There has also been a recent addition of 19 Bloomsbury rooms which are individually decorated.
As you are escorted to your suite, you are greeted by a flat screen television which gives you access to all the hotel services and amenities in multiple languages. Each suite is appointed with telephone with direct dial, voicemail, modem and fax access, wireless Internet, television with satellite channels, radio/CD/DVD with alarm, hairdryer, in-room safe, personally controlled air/heat, hospitality tray, a fully stocked minibar, magazines and fresh flowers. Our guest suite had a stamp theme, with interesting patterns on the bed cover, wallpaper, and heavy drapes (for privacy and if wanting to sleep late).
Suites include a desk, reading table and extra chair. Our balcony window overlooked the street below. Some suites have views of the hotel's private garden square.
There is a combination private bath and recessed shower with bath condiments complete with luxury bathrobe (available for purchase) and your own house slippers.
A Lounge and Terrace Bar is tastefully appointed, providing relaxation for an afternoon tea or to chat with new found acquaintances, often with live piano or music playing in the background.
The Chef's Table Restaurant offers seasonal dining delights, or you may choose to dine at the welcoming bar and garden terrace deck on warm days. Our breakfast provided a menu buffet selection, including cereals, fruit, juice, yogurt, toast, and coffee, with English breakfast of eggs, tomato, pastry, soup, sausage and ham.
There is also a sauna and fully equipped gym, with meeting room for conferences and weddings.
The staff was very knowledgeable and courteous.
Rates range from $311 for a Superior Double to $671 for an Executive Suite (£164 to £354 GBP) per night, depending on size of room and the season (rates are subject to change without notice).
We would like to thank the Montague for assisting with our feature.
